Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity is delighted to announce that Nanette Milne MSP will be attending a free microchipping event in her local constituency on Friday 13th June.
The event, to be held at Pet Hut, Poundstretcher, Woodside, Aberdeen from 10am – 2pm, will provide free chips to local dog owners while Dogs Trust representatives will also be on hand to offer general advice and remind dog owners of the importance of keeping their microchip database details up to date.
Nanette Milne MSP will be bringing along her own dog, Cammy, to be microchipped at the event, and will also be taking the opportunity to speak with members of her constituency about the benefits of compulsory microchipping.
Nanette Milne, Scottish Conservative MSP for the North East said:
“Microchipping has proved successful in reuniting owners with lost or stolen pets as well as relieving the pressure on animal charities, rehoming centres and local authorities, and helping to protect the welfare of dogs by promoting responsible dog ownership.
“Dogs Trust are to be congratulated for funding this free microchipping event. They have given a commitment to help chip all dogs in Scotland and I hope that this can help reduce the numbers of stray dogs we see as well as address issues surrounding dog ownership in Scotland.”
Microchipping is a simple and effective tool which helps to rapidly reunite lost or straying pets with their owners. This in turn reduces the number of healthy dogs unnecessarily put to sleep and saves money for Local Authorities by cutting kennelling costs.
Compulsory microchipping was successfully introduced in Northern Ireland in 2012 and Wales and England are set to follow suit in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Dogs Trust would like to see compulsory microchipping become law throughout the UK and therefore welcomes the consultation recently launched by the Scottish Government on this issue.
Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity. We have eighteen rehoming centres across the UK and one in Ireland, and invest substantial resources in information services and education on responsible dog ownership.
