Nanette Milne, Scottish Conservative MSP for the North East has called on the SNP Ministers to work to develop a sustainable future role for Scotland’s lighthouses. The North East MSP has written to Scottish Ministers to ask how communities can be supported in order to protect and maintain these iconic structures.
Nanette Milne, Scottish Conservative MSP for the North East said:
“Along our coasts, Scotland is home to make wonderful lighthouses. They are symbols of our history and our connection with the sea, yet in recent times the future of many lighthouses has been unclear.
“Fraserburgh is home to the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses which as a charitable trust has undertaken great work to preserve the industrial and social history of Scottish lighthouses as well as developing a first class visitor attraction in the North East.
“In the case of other lighthouses across Scotland, organisations such as the RSBP and the National Trust for Scotland have taken over the management of the Mull of Galloway lighthouse and lighthouse keepers cottage to provide a sustainable future for that lighthouse.
“I have written to SNP Ministers to find out what discussions they have had with Scottish Local Authorities on the future role for Scotland’s lighthouses and how communities can be supported in order to protect and maintain these iconic structures.
“If we do not protect our lighthouses, a vital part of our maritime history could be lost forever.”
