More farmers could be drafted in to help with the snow-clearing effort this winter after a new code of conduct was agreed between the National Farmers’ Union Scotland, Transport Scotland and the Society of Chief Officers of Transportation for Scotland.
Nanette Milne, Scottish Conservative MSP for the North East said:
“I welcome the new code of conduct which is both a victory for common sense and a welcome move as Scotland’s Councils prepare for winter.
“In past years when we have faced prolonged periods of severe winter weather many local farmers have come to the rescue and helped to clear rural roads – often without being asked or reimbursed for costs occurred.
“Many local farmers are best placed to help with the snow-clearing as they live in the communities affected and know those local roads which will often be first blocked as well as having the specialist equipment needed to clear roads.
“I hope the new code of conduct will provide the framework to help councils prepare for winter and be able to call upon local farmers to help get Scotland moving.”
