Alex Salmond has been branded a man without a plan by North East MSP, Nanette Milne after it became clear that an independent Scotland would not be able to use the Pound.
All three major UK parties have ruled out the possibility of a having currency union in an independent Scotland. This leaves the nationalists with just two options: a rush to join the Euro or to create a separate unproven currency.
Throwing his toys out the pram, Alex Salmond has made a reckless threat that an independent Scotland will default on its national debt because he will not be get a deal to keep the Pound. Nanette Milne, Scottish Conservative MSP for the North East said that Salmond’s threat would have a negative impact on the country’s credit rating if we left the UK. This would push up our mortgage rates, make our credit card bills more expensive and increase the cost of getting a car loan. Losing the Pound would mean higher prices for all of us.
The Pound is one of the most secure currencies in the world, and the only way to keep the pound is to stay in the UK.
Nanette Milne, Scottish Conservative MSP for the North East said:
“Alex Salmond is a man without a plan. An independent Scotland will not be able to keep the Pound and the First Minister is finally recognising that he can no longer make false promises. “The SNP’s reckless threat to default on debt when they don’t get a deal on the Pound risks putting up costs for people across the North East.
“People know if you don’t pay your bills you get a bad credit rating. Alex Salmond’s threat to default on debt would mean higher mortgage repayments, credit card bills and car loans for people in the North East. Why would we want to take that risk?
“Alex Salmond needs to come clean about what currency an independent Scotland would use. When people across the North East go to the polls in September they now know that a vote to separate from the UK is a vote to lose the Pound. The only way to keep the Pound is to stay in the UK.”
