Nanette Milne, Scottish Conservative MSP for the North East has called on the North East to be given resources to build additional indoor tennis facilities.
Sportscotland announced yesterday that it is investing £5.8m in tennis over the next four years to help modernise and develop the game’s structure, improve facilities, and widen access. The announcement included £2 million which has been earmarked to support the development of up to four indoor tennis centres in local authority.
Nanette Milne, Scottish Conservative MSP for the North East and Shadow Minster for Sport said:
“We are all proud of Andy Murray or achieving his stunning Wimbledon men’s final win.
“I welcome the announcement that Sportscotland is to invest £5.8m in tennis over the next four years. The focus has turned to what can be done to support tennis is Scotland and how we can realise the potential from the significant uptake and interest in the sport.
“SportScotland’s funding announcement aims to make it more accessible for people in Scotland to play tennis in improving facilities. It is vital that this does not just focus on the central belt bias.
“There is a great opportunity to inspire a new generation of Scots to take up tennis. I will be making the case for the North East to receive our fair share of that funding.
“The North East already has some good facilities however it is clear that demand is high and if we are going to see the development of four new indoor tennis centres the North East should have one located here.
“The £2 million which has been earmarked to support the development of up to four indoor tennis centres in local authority areas is very welcome and I hope that we will one of these in the North East.
“Andy Murray’s win has the potential to inspire a new generation of young players. The challenge now is to make sure that North East youngsters are given that opportunity.”
