Nanette Milne, Scottish Conservative MSP for the North East has become the champion for the rare twinflower. The North East MSP has signed up to become a plant ambassador for Plantlife and has chosen to support he conservation work of the Twinflower (Linnaea Borealis).
Nanette Milne, Scottish Conservative MSP for the North East said:
“I first came across the twinflower in Royal Deeside and was taken with its delicate beauty.
“The twinflower could arguable be the flower of the North East given that it is now mostly found in the Grampian area and the fact that the plant was first recorded in Britain in 1795 from a pinewood near Aberdeen.
“I am delighted to support the work of Plantlife in the Scottish Parliament and to promote the importance of twinflower as one of Scotland’s very special species.
“The twinflower is a classic species with which to illustrate the diversity of Scotland’s wildlife and the importance of retaining as much of that diversity as possible in the face of continuing environmental change. Twinflower is a great symbol of a resilient ecosystem: one that can support populations of this species, if managed appropriately.
“Plantlife are to be congratulated for their work especially in producing management guidance for land owners and managers with this species on their land, with advice on how to do the right thing for this plant and others that grow in similar habitats. The guide contains practical advice on managing woodland, in a way that benefits nature.
“I hope that residents across the North East will help support the work of Plantlife and will get involved by visit their website to discover more about the important work they are undertaking: www.plantlife.org.uk/scotland”
