Mearns

George Carr alongside Tracey Smith are your two Conservative Councillors who represent the Mearns Ward on Aberdeenshire Council. 

Having represented the Mearns since 2007,  George was awarded the  Rural Champion for Scotland at the Scottish Councillor awards in 2018.  He has always stood up for local residents and done what he can to raise their concerns and help the community. He states that “The Mearns is one of the most exciting areas in Aberdeenshire   with a rich mix of natural and cultural heritage as well as being the home to Burns, Lewis Grassic Gibbon and Joan Eardley”. 

Other interests George has include being a Stonehaven Fireball swinger, Chairman Stonehaven Scouts; and working for the Scottish Agricultural College as a grass specialist. 

George’s priorities for the Mearns Ward 

  • Campaign to ensure Aberdeenshire gets a Fair Share of funding from Scottish Government. 
  • Continue to assist  the MERCHAT group who are doing amazing pioneering work to replace and renovate our coastal path. 
  • Promote the collection of kerbside glass in Aberdeenshire. 
  • Ensure we see progress to bring our pot-holed roads up to a safe and acceptable standard. 
  • Work hard to see the transfer of Benholm Mill to North East Preservation Trust. 
  • Collaborate with MP and MSPs to see safer road junctions and pedestrian crossings

Mearns Councillor welcomes decision on Laurencekirk playing fields

Mearns Conservative Councillor, George Carr has welcomed the decision on the existing Mearns Academy playing fields. Aberdeenshire Policy and Resources Committee recently voted overwhelmingly to retain the playing fields against a recommendation to sell. Councillor Carr said "local groups have been campaigning for several years now and this is a significant milestone to bring some closure to this matter. Mearns Community Council and all the consultations on Laurencekirk going back to those on the Community Centre were clear that these pitches should be retained."

Local views sought on Fettercairn Arch road layout

Mearns Cllr George Carr has requested that Roads Officers consult locals and review the traffic layout at Fettercairn Arch.Following repeated concerns being expressed by residents to Cllrs and Officers from far and wide, a meeting was held with local Councillors to consider  options.Cllr Carr explained "the original work to the road layout at Fettercairn Arch was never considered by Councillors but was implemented by Roads Officers in an attempt to protect the historic structure. Unfortunately, since this work took place many cars have been damaged,  and last summer more than one caravan got stuck which took several hours to jack up and release.

Catterline takes a stand against nature!

Local Mearns Cllr George Carr has congratulated Catterline residents who have come together following severe land slips during the wet winter of 2012.The sea cliffs in front of North Row in the village suffered a worrying slip which came perilously close to the road in front of their houses. This was actually the latest land  slip,  which also blocked their road to the beach for several months.Following extensive consideration of engineering solutions and costings, it became abundantly clear that a conventional solution would be extremely expensive.
