Mearns Conservative Councillor, George Carr has welcomed the decision on the existing Mearns Academy playing fields. Aberdeenshire Policy and Resources Committee recently voted overwhelmingly to retain the playing fields against a recommendation to sell.
Councillor Carr said "local groups have been campaigning for several years now and this is a significant milestone to bring some closure to this matter. Mearns Community Council and all the consultations on Laurencekirk going back to those on the Community Centre were clear that these pitches should be retained.
I have been in touch with the Scottish Archers who have used the field for competitions and deem it perfect for archery. They are delighted and have said they would like to make Laurencekirk their most northerly competition site.
Apart from retaining green space at the gateway to Laurencekirk and additional pitches for the current academy, the reasons for retention were compelling."
